The GIBBERISH Poetry Experiment returns to TOAST April 15th from 8-11pm. This is an open-mic event and anyone and everyone is invited to read. At GIBBERISH, poets have the opportunity to jam with musicians and take their spoken word pieces to a whole new level.

Featuring poets such as Russ Green, Barbara Ann Branca, Doug Swezey and a very special performance by Mr. George Wallace.

Holding it down will be the Toast house band led by Scotty Gropper of The Others & Delicious Trees.

In the tradition of the Beat Poet, coffeehouse gatherings in San Francisco and the Bowery Poetry Cafe in downtown NY, FRESH is pleased to announce our newest project: GIBBERISH. GIBBERISH will be an open-mic poetry and performance art experiment, blended together with live music. Anyone and everyone is welcome to come down and read their work. In The Artists' Own Words:

There are many reasons to capture the image of a person, whether it be through inspiration, commission, or voyeurism. Each drawing and painting beg to immortalize every memory through my unique perspective. All things fade to antiquity in time, but a portrait will keep us curious to the unknown personalities and indistinct interactions happening around us, even the times we think no one is watching.

I take a leap into unknown cities, countries, and groups of people with the same enthusiasm as I would at home with my closest friends and family. My work is a homage to a time of a naturalist observations of our surroundings. These canvases and drawings are the field studies of my existence.

These are portraits of adults with developmental disabilities. I spend 40 hours a week working with these individuals and I have come to care about them deeply. Each of the people that I chose to paint has a BIG personality. Patty is sweet, affectionate, and intense. She’s cool to draw and hang out with. Mitra cracks everyone up. She’s always singing and dancing in the most spontaneous ways. The staff is constantly fighting over who gets to spend the day with her. John is adorable and mysterious. He can tell you everyone’s birthday, address, and marital status, if you ask him. Once you meet any of these people I don’t think you’ll ever forget them.

I started drawing them when I began my job, about 4 months ago, and what was initially a fascination with their interesting faces, became a study of their characters. Before I started working with the special needs population I didn’t understand them the way that I do now. I felt awkward and uneasy around them. I want to confront some of the misconceptions that people have about this population. I believe that what keeps them separate from the rest of us is that people feel uncomfortable; they don’t know what to expect, so they mainly ignore them or avoid them. Through these images I hope people will be able to open themselves up to our common humanity. They are people, just like you and me. They are open and sweet and full of thoughts and emotions. I want to bring to light the fact that they have the same emotions and experiences as everyone else. I want people to see that there is nothing to fear.

Tim Needles is an artist, photographer, humorist, and writer from Mout Sinai, NY. His eclectic media and art work has been seen in multiple exhibitions around New York as well as The Photographer's Forum, The New York Times, French Photo and The Long Island Pulse . He is the recipient of the Robert Rauschenberg Award in Washington DC and works with Adobe as a Master Educator. Tim is also the founder of The Strictly Students Film Festival and currently teaches art and film at Smithtown High School East.

"A Year In The Life": Project 366 is a photographic journal of each day of 2008 from the point of view of the artist Tim Needles. Every image was created using only an inexpensive point and shoot camera with the intent to creatively reflect on each day without overly advanced artistic tools. The resulting 366 photographs document a year which was both positive artistically and tumultuous personally from his travels to Puerto Rico, Maine, and San Francisco, to his father's struggle with cancer.

As one of the undeniable godfathers of the Long Island graffiti art scene, REME has remained a creative force to be reckoned with. While his roots dug into the walls and streets some twenty five years ago, REME has continued to evolve as an artist, designer, and entrepreneur. After a successful run as a featured customizer on the Speed Channel's popular "Unique Whips" automobile show, REME has recently celebrated the grand opening of his own REME Designs Studio in Patchogue.

For "Three Generations Of Decay", REME has produced over fifteen new works on canvas. The new series of works pay tribute to the essence and soul of graffiti. The paintings are like urban art shrines pulled directly from our own visual collective consciousness. With an unwavering respect for his craft and abstract sensibilities, REME continues to blur the lines of what a graffiti-based artist could and should be.

Austin Furtak-Cole is one of the most engaging and promising young painters on the Long Island art scene. His new body of work, which premiered recently at the Lawrence Alloway Gallery at Stony Brook University, is a powerful exploration of the connection between figurative and abstract-based work. Like DeKooning, whose women paintings were seen as a "retreat back to the figure", Austin has snubbed convention as an abstract painter, following his own inner direction, regardless of where it leads him. Rather than trying to live up to some false sense of dogma, Austin has challenged his notion of painting by allowing his images to come into existence as they do. Alongside the figurative studies in this show are some of the most stunning abstract paintings you'll find on Long Island today.
